(Trends Wide) — The US Department of Justice announced a statewide investigation into Georgia’s prisons on Tuesday.
“This investigation will be comprehensive, but we will focus on the harm done to prisoners by violence against each other. We are also investigating sexual abuse of gay, lesbian and transgender prisoners by prisoners and staff,” said Kristen Clarke, headed by the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
Clarke cited a law authorizing the Justice Department to investigate state prisons. The so-called pattern or practice investigation would examine possible constitutional violations.
