The US House of Representatives voted to override the veto used by President Donald Trump to reject a defense policy bill worth $ 740 billion, in a move that reflects deep divisions within the Republican party during Trump’s last weeks in the White House.
109 Republicans voted to override Trump’s veto and the vote ended with 322 votes in favor and 87 votes rejected, placing the bill in the hands of the Republican-led Senate. A final vote is expected this week. If the Senate endorses the House resolution, it will be the first time any Trump veto has been overridden during his presidency.
Trump said he had rejected the legislation because he wanted to remove protections for social media companies in matters not related to national security. He added that he also objects to a provision in the bill to change the names of the military bases bearing the names of the generals of the Confederate stage during the American Civil War.
The legislation addresses a number of defense policy issues and includes raising the salaries of US forces and has been approved by Congress annually since 1961.
