The U.S. government has agreed to acquire a stake in Lithium Americas Corp., Secretary of Energy Chris Wright announced Tuesday on Bloomberg TV. The investment will support the Canadian company’s development of its Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada.
This deal represents the Trump administration’s latest effort to accelerate the development of a domestic supply chain for metals essential to the defense, automotive, and consumer electronics sectors, thereby countering China’s market dominance. The move follows a similar action in July, when the U.S. Defense Department announced a $400 million equity investment in MP Materials Corp. to fund the construction of a new rare-earth magnet plant.
