American computer systems company light construction USG plans to invest $250 million in infrastructure and innovation to drive the market in Mexico and Latin America over the next five years.
According to Fernando Fernández, general director of the firm for the region, in recent years, materials how gypsum boards, better known as drywall, have managed to position themselves in commercial, industrial and, especially, housing works; so they will continue with their growth plans.
Hence, 63% of the specifications made by the company during 2022 were registered in the residential sector, which means a growth of 5% compared to last year and 20% compared to 5 years ago.
Fernández highlighted that the most participatory entities in terms of demand are the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City, Nuevo León, Quintana Roo, Jalisco and Baja California.
Self-construction, a potential market
One of the most common practices in terms of housing production in Mexico is the self-build. In fact, in 2021 the gap between buying and remodeling was closed, since according to the Federal Mortgage Society (SHF), 43.1% of users preferred to use their credit to make improvements to their home and it is expected that by 2022, this figure will rise. to 63 percent.
Luis González, commercial director of USG Mexico, explained that, traditionally, the materials most used in the self-build they were the rod, the block and the cement; however, the federal government has begun to encourage the use of materials light given its benefits.
In this sense, USG made an alliance with the Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) to inform and train the population on these alternative systems for the self-build.
“We are looking to enter this market. Currently, Sedatu already recommends building with lightweight systems and we are making a program so that the same people know how to install it, ”he commented during a meeting with the media.
According to the manager, some of the advantages of using this kind of materials son:
- They are six times faster to install than a traditional construction (block).
- Up to 90% lighter.
- They save 35% in time of building.
- They are 80% cleaner, since their installation does not require water and generates less dust.
- Greater resistance to buckling.
