Following a commanding 43-10 victory over UCLA, the Utah Utes emerged as one of college football’s most talked-about teams in the opening week of the 2025 season. Coach Kyle Whittingham’s squad will look to build on that success in its home opener against Cal Poly on Saturday, September 6.
The Utes, who retooled their roster after a disappointing 5-7 finish in 2024, showed immediate improvement with key additions from New Mexico. New offensive coordinator Jason Beck and quarterback Devon Dampier made an impressive debut, with Dampier completing 21 of 25 passes for 293 total yards and three touchdowns. The offensive output marked Utah’s highest point total against an FBS opponent since 2023.
Defensively, Utah was equally dominant, stifling UCLA and its star transfer quarterback, Nico Iamaleava. The Utes’ defense held the Bruins to just 220 total yards for the game.
Their upcoming opponent, Cal Poly, also enters the matchup with a 1-0 record after defeating San Diego 41-17. The Mustangs, an FCS program, are currently receiving votes in the FCS Coaches Poll.
The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. ET kickoff at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. It will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+, with Mark Neely providing play-by-play and Barrett Brooks serving as the analyst.
