(Trends Wide) — A collision between a garbage truck and a trailer carrying about 100 monkeys scattered boxes of live animals along a highway in Montour County, Pennsylvania on Friday. After the crash, the search for a “small number of monkeys” began, state police said.
On Saturday night, two Pennsylvania State Police officers, Andrea Pelachick and Lauren Lesher, tweeted “All the monkeys have been accounted for.”
The whereabouts of a monkey were unknown on Saturday morning, according to a tweet Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Troop F.
Temperatures were below zero on Friday night.
Police initially tweeted that “a small number of monkeys may have fled the scene of the accident into the surrounding area,” following the crash that blocked traffic on SR 54 at I-80 near Danville.
It is unclear how many monkeys had been lost.
Trends Wide affiliate WOLF reports that the monkeys were being taken to a laboratory at the time of the collision.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission, the state agency responsible for wildlife conservation, was involved in the search for the remaining monkey, according to PSP.
“We ask that no one attempt to search for or capture the animal. Anyone who sees or locates the monkey is asked not to approach it, not to try to catch it and not to come into contact with the monkey,” the PSP tweeted.
There were no immediate reports of injuries from the crash.
