Video scandals in Campeche

The 2023 season of Jaguar Tuesday has changed protagonists. And intentionally. The limits of this denunciation strategy have been marked, after the disclosure of a special investigation by the reporter Fátima Monterrosa, from N+ Media, and the videos of two of the members of her cabinet —Armando Toledo, head of the governor’s office , and Raúl Pozos, current secretary of education— and from Morenista senator Rocío Abreu, receiving cash in an office located on the fourth floor of the Campeche Government Palace, in the spring of 2021, weeks before the elections to renew the governorship .

Less than 10 hours after the disclosure of the videos on the Punto de Partida news program, Mayor Lía Limón, from Álvaro Obregón, went before the capital’s prosecutor’s office to file seven complaints against her predecessor, the current governor of Campeche, for alleged damage patrimonial, quantified in almost 120 million pesos.

“The money that disappeared was from social programs that should have been allocated to the most vulnerable population of the mayor’s office, especially considering that these were times of a pandemic, but even worse – and much more serious – is that the then finance director wrote checks to his own name for 31.2 million pesos that he collected or endorsed other officials of the mayor’s office,” he illustrated.

Accustomed to the blows, the Morenista governor did not directly allude to the videos. “We know that we are right and that the truth always emerges,” she retorted. Is the jaguar cornered? How to sustain the narrative that her administration is carrying out an exemplary crusade against corruption, if her main collaborators are in the eye of the hurricane for mismanagement? Will the second season of the governor’s program be suspended due to force majeure?
