The Minnesota Vikings are releasing quarterback Desmond Ridder, according to an NFL Network report. The Vikings had signed the former Atlanta Falcons starter after J.J. McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain in a Week 2 loss.
Ridder, who has not played in a game this season, is now looking for his fifth team since the 2024 offseason. After being traded from Atlanta to the Arizona Cardinals, he was signed from their practice squad by the Las Vegas Raiders. He later had a brief stint with the Cincinnati Bengals before being released at the final roster deadline and signing with Minnesota.
His last game appearance was for the Raiders in the 2024 season finale, a 15-9 loss to his former Falcons team.
Originally a third-round pick by Atlanta in 2022, Ridder backed up Marcus Mariota before starting the final four games of his rookie year. He entered 2023 as the team’s starter, ultimately appearing in 19 games (17 starts) over two seasons. With the Falcons, he passed for 3,544 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
In other news involving former Falcons players, the New York Jets signed linebacker Mykal Walker to their active roster. Walker started 20 games over three seasons in Atlanta, recording 187 tackles, three interceptions, and one sack.
