Real Madrid, which is participating in the competition after winning the Spanish King’s Cup last season, advanced to the final match of the Super Cup after its 5-3 victory over its arch-neighbor, Atletico Madrid, after an extension to extra time, in the semi-finals last Wednesday.
On the other hand, Barcelona, which won the Spanish League title last season and subsequently participated in the Spanish Super Cup, qualified for the final match, after defeating Osasuna with two unanswered goals in the other semi-final match, last Thursday.
This is Real Madrid’s second victory over Barcelona in various competitions this season, after previously defeating them 2-1 in the two teams’ meeting in the Spanish League this season, last October.
Real Madrid also reduced the gap separating it from Barcelona, which holds the record for the number of wins in the Spanish Super Cup, to only one title.
