I imagine small fires, coming to life in different parts of the country. They were clear after the seizure of the CNDH facilities in 2020, now recovered by the Secretariat of Citizen Security. Some attempts to take over local installations in other parts of the country followed. So suddenly, the violet fever that has different shades is organized and activated. But beyond the shootings and the protests, there is a very characteristic way of denouncing the feminist movement in Mexico that is both powerful and moving: art. Visit México Feminicida, two installations with the Mexican letters characteristic of the Visit México brand over others in black that say FEMINICIDA. The letters were placed both in Guadalajara and Monterrey and force us not to forget that this country that wants to give another image to the world, that likes to talk about so many things to show off, has not resolved one of its most painful episodes, femicide.
The same thing happened with the collective that made the ex-glorieta to Colón in Mexico City, the Glorieta de las Mujeres que Luchan, with nothing more than a sculpture and a ladder, they managed to put on the pedestal the image of a woman with her fist in tall. The sculpture is still there. We will have to see who and when they dare to remove it to put La Joven de Amajac.
It was also with art that the women painted the walls of the National Palace with light to put the same message: Mexico Feminicide. It was with paint and flowers that more women turned the fences that protected the same walls into a memorial. It was art, and it was created with small pots of white paint for the names, pink to transform the rivets into crosses, and flowers that arrived in bouquets and were shared among strangers.
This is how these small fires are, they coordinate, they work as a team, no one is looking for recognition or protagonism, the friends pass on the contacts of the other friends and there is always someone willing to help: to accompany a complaint in the prosecutor’s office, to guide a safe abortion , to pick up a violent woman from home, to fill the streets with the names of others or go out to march for the one you didn’t know and is no longer there. Although there are many feminisms, women’s movements, even those who do not identify themselves as feminists, agree on the urgency of our agenda: stop violence.
Art moves and transforms. Art is not violence and at the same time finds the deepest way to portray it. Mexican women are going to change this country, and they are doing it, among other things, with a unique form of protest.
