European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the company “AstraZeneca” will deliver 9 million additional doses of its anti-Corona vaccine to the European Union in the first quarter of this year.
In a tweet via Twitter, she wrote: “AstraZeneca will provide 9 million additional doses in the first quarter of the year (40 million in total) compared to last week’s offer, and deliveries will start one week earlier than scheduled.”
“The company will boost its manufacturing capacity in Europe,” she added.
On the other hand, von der Leyen told the German “ZDF” channel: “We want 70 percent of adults to have received the vaccine by the end of the summer,” confirming the pursuit of this goal, which was announced on January 19.
The English-Swedish company, AstraZeneca, had announced unexpectedly this month that it would suspend supplies to the European Union of its candidate vaccine in the first quarter, sparking a supply dispute.
Last week, the company offered to advance the delivery date for some shipments to the European Union.
It also offered an additional eight million doses to the European Union in an attempt to defuse the dispute, but an EU official told Reuters that this was far less than what it had promised in the first place, as AstraZeneca had committed to providing at least 80 million doses in the first quarter.
