Labor MP sparks massive backlash after posting a meme about residents putting up Christmas decorations early – so do you think it’s offensive?
- Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery shared meme of cartoon Santa pointing a gun at elf
- The meme said ‘Every time someone decorates in November, Santa kills an elf’
- The post was quickly deleted after sparking outrage in public and other MPs
Sonia Hornery, who represents Wallsend in Newcastle, shared a photo to Facebook last month of a cartoon Santa pointing a gun at an elf crouching on his knees.
‘Just remember… every time someone decorates in November, Santa kills an elf,’ the meme read.
Despite initially defending the meme as humorous, she eventually deleted the post after copping backlash from colleagues and social media users.

‘Since when is violence and killing humour? You need to check yourself!’ one person commented.
‘Imagine if children saw this. What a low act for a member of the NSW parliament,’ another wrote.
Ms Hornery seemed undeterred by the criticism and when one said it was ‘sad’ people voted for her, the MP replied: ’75 per cent of the electorate did. That’s a lot of sad people’.
She also commented that the meme was a good way to ‘weed out’ those who failed to see the funny side.
However it seemed her colleagues were also less than impressed, The Daily Telegraph reported.
‘Clearly the member for Wallsend is taking advice from the social media experts in Beijing,’ one MP told the publication.
Ms Hornery said she took full responsibility for what was shared on her social media accounts and apologised for causing any offence.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Ms Hornery for further comment.
