Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) said on Thursday that its revenue in the fiscal fourth quarter came in better than expected. The company, however, earned lower than what analysts had anticipated in Q4.  Walmart also gave weak guidance for the future on Thursday.

Walmart said that it concluded the fourth quarter with £1.50 billion of net loss that translates to 53.03 pence per share. In the same quarter last year, it had reported £2.97 billion of net income or £1.04 per share.

On an adjusted basis, the American multinational earned £1.0 per share in Q4. Walmart said that it generated £109 billion of revenue in the recent quarter versus the year-ago figure of £101.53 billion.

According to FactSet, experts had forecast the company to post £106.43 billion of revenue in the fourth quarter. Their estimate for adjusted per-share earnings stood at a higher £1.08 per share.

The retailer said that its comparable sales in the United States saw an 8.6% annualised growth in Q4 versus a much lower 5.6% increase expected. Digital sales, as per Walmart, jumped 69% in the recent quarter. The Bentonville-based company valued its COVID-19-related costs in the fourth quarter at £790 million. In the prior quarter (Q3), Walmart saw a 79% annualised growth in its e-commerce sales.

Walmart announces a 2% increase in its 2022 annual dividend

According to Walmart, its capital investments are likely to be worth roughly £10.03 billion in fiscal 2022. The retailer also announced a 2% increase in its 2022 annual dividend to £1.58 per share. The U.S. company approved a share repurchase programme worth £14.33 billion.

Excluding fuel, Walmart now forecasts under 5% growth in its U.S. comparable sales in fiscal 2022. It, however, expects its full-year per-share earnings to slightly decline. Analysts, on the other hand, are calling for a 0.1% decline in the Walmart U.S. comparable sales and a 3% growth in EPS.

Walmart performed fairly upbeat in the stock market last year with an annual gain of more than 20%. At the time of writing, it is valued at £282.26 billion and has a price to earnings ratio of 20.10.
