Blinken denounced the atrocities that are reported to have been committed in Tigray, pointing to an increasing “disappointment” over the handling of neighboring Ethiopia and Eritrea, with what he described as a “worsening humanitarian crisis.”
He expressed the “grave concern of the United States about the aforementioned atrocities, and the general deteriorating situation in the Tigray region in Ethiopia.”
The US Secretary of State said: “We ask international partners, especially the African Union and regional partners, to work with us to confront the crisis in Tigray, including by moving in the United Nations and other concerned entities.”
These statements came after Amnesty International issued a report accusing Eritrean forces of killing hundreds of civilians in Tigray within 24 hours last year, in an incident that the organization described as possibly reaching the level of crimes against humanity, while Eritrea rejected these accusations.
It should be noted that the Ethiopian government forces had seized last November, the capital of Tigray Region, Muqli, from forces loyal to a local political party, which the central government accused of rebellion, while the fighting continued at a lesser pace.
