The Beijing sanctions came in response to the sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, Britain and Canada last week over what it described as violations of the rights of Uyghur Muslims and other minorities in the Xinjiang region of western China.
Blinken’s statement came after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned Beijing’s sanctions and pledged to defend human rights.
China rejects Western accusations of violating Uighur rights, and affirms its determination to “safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests.” Beijing called on Western countries to stop “politically exploiting issues related to Xinjiang and interfering in China’s internal affairs in all its forms.”
