The United States expressed its concern about the human rights situation in Egypt.
“We are extremely concerned about the human rights situation in Egypt and the suppression of freedom of expression and civil society,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in his daily press statement.
He stated that the American administration would raise these issues implicitly and publicly with Egyptian officials.
He added that human rights violations and repression of civil society undermine the dynamism and stability of Egypt as a partner for his country.
With regard to US arms sales to Egypt, Price stressed that the United States “can pursue its interests and stick to its values.”
He said, “Certainly, there will be no blank check for any country, whether they are close security partners, competitors or opponents,” noting that US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made that clear.
He described Egypt as a country with an important and pioneering position in the peace process in the Middle East, and it also plays an important role in supporting stability in the region.
