The communications advisor to the US National Security Council said John Kirby The US administration believes that the war between Israel andHezbollah Lebanese can be avoided, despite recent attacks, while the US President confirmed Joe Biden It is “working” to enable residents to return to their homes in the border areas of southern Lebanon and northern Israel.
Tensions in the region have escalated following the bombing of communications equipment in Lebanon, which killed dozens last Tuesday and Wednesday, and an attack targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut today, Friday, which Israeli sources said targeted a number of Hezbollah leaders.
However, Kirby said, “We still believe there is time and space to reach a diplomatic solution. We believe that is the best way forward.”
He added that the outbreak of war on the border between Israel and Lebanon “is not inevitable, and we will continue to do everything in our power to try to prevent it.. We do not want to see an escalation or a second front in this war.”
For his part, Biden said in statements to reporters today, Friday, that he is “working to make sure that people in northern Israel as well as southern Lebanon are able to return to their homes, and return safely.”
“The secretary of state, the secretary of defense, and our entire team are working with the intelligence community to try to get that done. We'll keep working until we get it done, but we have a long way to go,” he added.
Biden denied that a ceasefire agreement in Gaza was out of reach, following a Wall Street Journal report that said officials believed the deal was unlikely.
“If you say one day it's not realistic, why don't we leave too? A lot of things don't seem realistic until we get them done. We have to keep doing it,” Biden insisted.
