The exciting results continued in the fourth round of the Champions League, with a big victory for Barcelona, a loss for Arsenal against Inter Milan, Saint-Germain against Atletico Madrid, and Bayern Munich also defeated Benfica.
At the San Siro Stadium, Hakan Calhanoglu continued his wonderful record in penalty kicks, as he successfully executed a penalty kick that led Inter Milan to a 1-0 victory over Arsenal today, Wednesday, in the fourth round of the major European Championship.
Neither team conceded a goal in the first three rounds of the tournament, but Arsenal’s defense was finally breached at the end of the first half of today’s match, and a handball was awarded against Mikel Merino.
Calhanoglu stepped forward to successfully execute the kick, scoring one of the 19 penalty kicks he had taken in all competitions since joining Inter.
Arsenal imposed a siege on Inter during the second half, but the Italian team’s goalkeeper, Jan Sommer, blocked a dangerous attempt from Kai Havertz, who wasted another opportunity, and then Inter defended wonderfully to end the match victorious and raise its score to ten points from four matches.
Arsenal, coached by Mikel Arteta, has frozen at seven points, and is outside the top eight places qualifying for the knockout rounds.
Saint-Germain loses to Atletico Madrid
Paris Saint-Germain’s disappointing results in the Champions League continued after it suffered a last-minute loss 2-1 at home to Atletico Madrid, leaving the French Premier League leaders out of the qualifying places for the next round.
Saint-Germain took the lead with an early goal from Warren Zairi-Emery, but Nauel Molina canceled out the home side’s lead in the first half in a very disappointing match at the Parc des Princes, which ended with Angel Correa scoring the winning goal for Atletico Madrid in the third minute of stoppage time for the match.
After four matches in the league stage, Paris Saint-Germain collected four points in 25th place out of 36 teams, while Atletico Madrid raised its hopes of advancing by obtaining the sixth point.
Saint-Germain will visit Bayern Munich and then Red Bull Salzburg, while Atletico Madrid will play away from home against Sparta Prague and then host Slovan Bratislava.
Lewandowski leads Barcelona to a big win
Striker Robert Lewandowski scored in each half to help in-form Barcelona to a 5-2 win over Serbian Red Star.
Defender Iñigo Martinez opened the scoring with a header from close range, taking advantage of Rafinha’s free kick in the 13th minute, but Silas beat the offside trap and equalized with a quick counterattack 14 minutes later.
But Lewandowski took advantage of a rebound from the right post following a shot from Rafinha to score the second goal in the 43rd minute, before increasing Barcelona’s lead eight minutes after the break by taking advantage of Jules Kounde’s cross.
The French full-back also played two assists, from which Rafinha and Fermin Lopez scored, before substitute Melson reduced the gap for Red Star in the 84th minute.
With this victory, Barcelona rises to sixth place among the 36 teams in the Champions League with nine points, and Red Star is in penultimate place without points from four matches.
Bayern wins over Benfica
Jamal Musiala scored a header in the second half to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Benfica, recovering from two consecutive defeats in the tournament.
The German midfielder gave Bayern the lead in the 67th minute with a header from close range, in a match in which the home side dominated the match and wasted many opportunities.
Bayern raised its score to six points after four matches, occupying 17th place, level with Benfica, which did not pose an attacking threat, in 19th place.
The format of the most prominent European club tournament this season has shifted from the group stage to the league stage, with 36 teams playing eight matches each, with the top eight teams in the standings advancing directly to the next round, while the next sixteen teams in the standings will play a two-game playoff to advance in the tournament.
