Aerial footage posted on the Icelandic Met Office’s Facebook page showed a relatively small eruption so far, with lava flowing in opposite directions.
Glow can be seen from the lava from the outskirts of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, which is about 32 km away.
The emergency department said it was not expecting evacuations because the volcano is located in a remote valley 2.5 kilometers from the nearest road.
The Rikykins Peninsula has not experienced an eruption for a single volcano in 781 years.
There have been signs of a possible eruption of the volcano recently, with earthquakes occurring daily for the past three weeks. But volcanologists were still surprised that the seismic activity had subsided before the eruption.
