A Wisconsin man heroically saved a deer this week when he trekked out on to a frozen pond to retrieve the stuck animal.

The rescue took place on Tuesday, just three days before Christmas.

According to WAOW, Gil Lancour was driving home during his lunch break from work when he spotted the deer in the Cranmoor marshes, clearly not moving very well.

Rather than continue to drive on, Lancour decided to stop and head out on to the frozen pond, where he sat with the deer for a brief period of time before helping it off the ice.

First, however, he called his boss, who is responsible for the viral video currently making the rounds after putting it on Facebook.

John Moss posted a video of a deer rescue on Facebook that has since gone viral

The video picks up with Lancour already beginning his push of the deer to the edge of the pond. The deer appears to be simply sitting, while Lancour pushes with both hands.

Lancour appears to get exhausted at one point, either with the weight of the deer or the danger of walking carefully on a block of frozen ice; Lancour later claimed the deer was probably around 90 pounds.

‘You got a ways [to go],’ Lancour’s boss says. ‘You’re two-thirds.’

Finally, Lancour comes upon a ridge, which he navigates by slightly shoving the deer over it, which suddenly sparks the deer to start trying to stand up.

After sliding around while trying to get on its hooves, the deer eventually reaches a snowy bank, which allows it to stand up.

The deer then reaches the dirt and takes off in the opposite direction of its rescuer.

After that, the deer slid around the ice as it attempted to stand up on its own hooves

‘She was struggling and I knew she needed help to get off the ice, I didn’t even think twice about it,’ Lancour said to WMTV. ‘She needed to get off the ice and I was the only one around to help her.’

‘Obviously right away I was out there to help him but after he had it under control, then I was there for the show,’ said John Moss, the videographer.

‘I had a big smile on my face,’ Lancour said after saving the deer. ‘I was happy that she was able to run off on her own.’
