Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has revealed there is a ‘limit’ on how long the Bundesliga club can resist Manchester United‘s interest in Jadon Sancho.
The 20-year-old winger was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s No 1 target in the summer but United ultimately fell short in their pursuit to sign him after failing to meet his £108million valuation, with their highest offer reported to have been £92m.
The England international also has a contract at Signal Iduna Park until 2023, which could strengthen the German outfit’s position and resolve if United come back again next year.

Sancho was United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main summer target but they refused to meet the Bundesliga club’s £108m valuation
However, Watzke also conceded the financial implications of the Covid-19 pandemic may force the club to sell key assets in the not too distant future.
‘We could have made a big, valuable transfer in the summer, that’s well known. But we’re glad it didn’t come to this,’ Watzke told Sport Bild.
‘Of course, we will also implement transfers again in the future, because Covid is clearly throwing us back. Even the biggest clubs are feeling the effects of the pandemic, be it Bayern, Barcelona or Real Madrid.
‘At some point you come to the limit of what you can answer for. You can even see that in Munich right now with David Alaba as an example.’
Sancho has a contract at Dortmund until 2023 which strengthens the German side’s position
But chief executive Watzke insists the coronavirus pandemic may force the club’s hand
Bayern have failed to reach an agreement with Austria international Alaba, whose deal at the Allianz Arena runs out in 2021, with the club withdrawing their latest offer following months of unsuccessful negotiations.
Meanwhile, in the summer Sancho was keen to move to Old Trafford and while he did not vigorously push for a move, reports suggested he had agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford club.
Since then, he has struggled with consistency, even though did get among the goals in last week’s win over Zenit St Petersburg.
It was just his second goal of the season to go with his four assists from eight games this season, but Dortmund boss Lucien Favre hinted the summer transfer speculation may have negatively impacted on the player.
Watzke highlighted how all clubs are struggling and referred to Bayern Munich’s struggles in negotiating a new deal for David Alaba
‘Every player has slow periods,’ Favre said ahead of the 2-0 win against Zenit. ‘There was a lot of talk about Jadon in the summer, something like that can also have an influence.
‘But no player is consistently in top form for a year, that’s impossible. You have to accept that.’
Sancho was an unused substitute in Dortmund’s latest Champions League clash, which saw them defeat Belgian side Club Brugge 3-0.
Sancho has been in indifferent form since the summer saga but scored against Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League last week
