We are stronger and better when we work together

Yesterday’s presentation involved a joint statement and a series of questions from the Canadian, US and Mexican media to the three North American leaders, but the atmosphere ended up being something of a morning: President López Obrador He referred to the “handsome actors” who appear in television series that end up advocating drug trafficking, and he also spoke of a continental alliance (a year and a half ago he spoke of a regional European Union-type alliance). By extending his comments, he prevented President Joe Biden from responding on how the United States is going to resolve the issue of migration and the entry of fentanyl.

In the same way, by talking about a hypothetical regional alliance, he prevented Justin Trudeau from answering a question about the details of a possible panel of controversies against Mexico in energy matters.

Within the framework of the X Summit of North American Leaders, from the central patio of the National Palace, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reiterated together with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, that the three governments reached agreements to continue working together and guarantee the security of their peoples.

“We address as a priority issue the economic and commercial integration, as I have already expressed, of the entire American continent, as well as the well-being of the peoples and the new relations of cooperation, leaving behind hegemonic interventionism,” AMLO announced in a message to the media. of communication after the private trilateral meeting with their counterparts.

Joe Biden emphasized the importance of the three nations joining forces to improve the conditions of their economies.

“We renew and deepen our cooperation. We are stronger and better when we work together (…) the priority of our shared agenda is that North America is the most competitive, prosperous and resilient place in the world in economic matters, ”he declared.

“The three of us are true partners, we work together with mutual respect and genuine affection (…) This summit and the trilateral relationship are so important because we share a vision for the future with a foundation of common values,” he said.

Biden stressed that they addressed the challenge of migration, for which he thanked the Mexican president for receiving those who do not follow the channels established in the US immigration policy.

Biden added that they also discussed commitments “to make North America a clean energy hub, and I think that’s within our grasp. And we can be global leaders on the climate crisis, that means working together to have zero emission vehicles, to establish charging stations for electric vehicles that go across our international borders, that means exploring markets for energy from of hydrogen”.

Petition to Congress

AMLO recognized Biden as the first president not to build a single meter of border wall and reported that he asked him to insist before the United States Congress to regularize the immigration status of millions of Mexicans. In addition, he thanked Trudeau for benefiting 25,000 Mexicans with temporary work visas.

For his part, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, highlighted the need for and commitment to an economic alliance and emphasized the need to promote clean economies through renewable energy.

He recognized that free trade thanks to the T-MEC has made the three economies among the most competitive in the world.

“When free trade is at risk it is not good for global competition. Fortunately, the belief in free and fair trade won the battle, we renegotiated the agreement and it became something much better.”

Trudeau described as productive the summit in which they reiterated a shared vision and the vigor of an alliance.

“I know we will make much more progress in the coming year and I look forward to hosting both of you in Canada for the next North American Leaders Summit,” he said.
