We enter the energy transition, we innovate in the production of electricity in a city and we strengthen sovereignty: Claudia Sheinbaum

Mexico City, January 22, 2023.- The Head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum supervised the first stage of the installation of the photovoltaic plant on the roofs of the Central de Abasto, located in the Iztapalapa mayor’s office and considered the largest market in the world with 367 hectares.

“By the time it is finished, this represents the solar plant on the roofs of a city, -in this case, the Central de Abasto-, the largest in any city in the world”, he highlighted.

“In total there will be 18 megawatts, and the second stage will begin to be installed, which is another eight, and later the other nine megawatts will be installed.”

He explained that in other cities around the world, there are many exercises where there are distributed photovoltaic panels on the roofs of houses, but in this case it is a single plant that is on the roofs of buildings that belong to the same entity and that They are generating electricity.

“We entered the energy transition, we innovated in the production of electricity in a city and we also strengthen sovereignty, because it is a solar plant of the Federal Electricity Commission, which benefits the Central de Abasto, benefits the inhabitants of the city and contributes to the improvement of the environment”, highlighted Claudia Sheinbaum.

The capital’s president explained that this 18-megawatt plant responds to the work of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), with an investment of 500 million pesos by the Ministry of Energy through a fund it has for renewable energies, and the Government of Mexico City with an investment of 100 million pesos.

It is estimated that, at the beginning of the second half of the year, the Solar Power Plant on the roofs of the Central de Abasto will be fully operational.

“This plant will generate a total of 25 gigawatt hours per year, the installed capacity is 18 megawatts, but its generation is 25 gigawatt hours, and it will allow or represent around 30 percent of the total electricity consumption of the Power Plant. Supply, and during the day there is going to be an injection, so to speak, of electricity for the consumption of the Central, and at night the Federal Commission itself connects or provides the electricity that the Central requires. If there was additional production, then it directly enters the city’s transmission and distribution system”, explained Claudia Sheinbaum.
