USA y Mexico endorsed their commitment to continue advancing the economic prosperity and security of North America, assured the Undersecretary of the United States Department of State, Wendy Sherman.

During her work visit to Mexico, the official met with the Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, of Finance and Public Credit, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, and of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, with whom she discussed issues to encourage economic development by encouraging investment in advanced manufacturing, including semiconductors and information communications technologies.

The meetings were very substantive. We were very direct, we are here to solve problems together. We all learned during the pandemic that we needed resilient supply chains,” the official told a group of journalists.

Regarding consultations to resolve a dispute over the Mexican government’s energy policies, Sherman noted that they are making progress and said he could not predict whether the dispute will reach a panel under the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada. He recalled that in this type of agreement there are always dispute mechanisms.

“I think that the Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, is right, the process is advancing, there have been good discussions and I am sure that we will find a solution to this (…) I am not going to prejudge what is going to happen in this process. I’m not in that. I am not an expert, I am not a lawyer. I’m going to leave it to the dispute mechanism,” she said.

In the context of the midterm elections in his country, Sherman assured that there is a commitment to Mexico and that is not going to change.

“The relationship between the United States and Mexico is absolutely a very strong commitment on the part of our country and it is not about whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, it is frankly about self-interest (…) I am not going to start working through hypotheses because We don’t know what’s going to happen, who will be in charge (in the House of Representatives),” he asserted.

“We face a complex set of challenges as partners. We are lucky to be neighbors who share interests, values ​​and a common vision for that future. That is why we make such a good team,” he added.

He also congratulated the Mexican government for advancing in the decriminalization of abortion.

The official did not want to comment on the reform of the political system in Mexico, she only limited herself to stating that democracy is very important in all countries.

“The United States believes deeply in the importance of free, fair, transparent and open elections,” he said.

North American Leaders Summit

Without informing the date of the next North American Leaders Summitthe official stressed that her visit to Mexico is an opportunity to anticipate shared priorities.

He also considered that one of the problems is the economic competitiveness of North America, so he hopes that the leaders will focus on employment, investment and economic resilience, in addition to addressing the fight against climate change and the issue of energy. clean.

This year Mexico and the United States commemorate 200 years of diplomatic relations.
