Australians have been warned to brace for up to 200mm of rainfall and storms with winds of up to 110km/h that could cause severe flooding.
Western Australia is the main area being battered by two low pressure systems while residents in the Northern Territory and Queensland have also been put on alert.
Sydney can also expect some rainfall starting on Thursday while Melbourne and southern parts of the country will see some hot weather over the weekend.
Meteorologist Jonathan How, from the Bureau of Meteorology, warned ‘the monsoon is imminent’ for the country’s tropical north, which is in its wet season.
‘The tropics are emerging from their slumber and two low pressure systems to the north of Western Australia will bring heavy rain and strong winds to communities from the Pilbara to the Kimberley,’ Mr How said.
‘Communities across northern WA as well as the Northern Territory and Queensland should start to think about their plans for the wet season.’

There is a severe weather warning for WA’s Pilbara district and a flood warning for the Pilbara and Desert regions – as well as southwestern parts of the NT.
One low pressure system has already breached WA’s north coast and moved inland while another is in the Indian Ocean south of Indonesia and moving to Australia’s north-west coast.
Cygnet Bay, north of Broome in WA, has been hit with 165mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours while Broome copped 75mm of rain.
Mr How said ‘daily rainfall totals of 100 to 200 millimetres are likely’.
‘Rain and strong winds will push down across the Pilbara by Friday and large totals will extend into the Gascoyne and Goldfields into the weekend,’ he said.
‘We are anticipating flooding, which could lead to roads being cut off and communities being isolated.
‘Pilbara residents should prepare for gale force winds, increased swell and heavy rainfall as it (the second system) reaches the coast on Thursday and Friday.

Further south, Perth is forecast for a shower or two and a possible storm on Thursday before giving way to cloudy skies on Friday and the weekend.
The temperature will reach a maximum of 36C in the WA capital on Friday with the Perth Coastal Plain and Perth Hills put on high alert for fires.
‘Hot to very hot condition with fresh and gusty easterly winds’ have resulted in the Goldfields being put on a fire weather warning.
On the east coast, Sydney will have possible showers and maximum of 26C on Thursday, which will drop to 22C on Friday with showers remaining possible.
This will remain consistent on Saturday with the chance of a shower and the temperature increasing from Sunday all the way through to Wednesday.
Canberra will have showers and a possible afternoon storm and a maximum of 25C on Thursday before the temperature drops to 20C with cloudy skies from Friday and over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Brisbane will be partly cloudy with a top of 29C on Thursday, which will drop to 27C with late showers forecast for Friday.
There is a 90 per cent chance of rain in Brisbane on Saturday and Sunday – with 45mm forecast for Saturday an 25mm forecast for Sunday.
Firefighters battling bushfires on Queensland’s Fraser Island got some reprieve when 25mm of rain fell on Tuesday.
The island’s bushfires, which have been burning since mid-October, are now at advice level with more rain forecast for Saturday and a thunderstorm set for Sunday.
While the rain could be helpful to firefighters, lightning from the Sunday’s predicted thunderstorm has the potential to spark more blazes.
Further south in Melbourne, rain is clearing on Thursday to make way for a sunny afternoon – although the maximum will remain at 18C.
The maximum will increase to 21C on Friday with partly cloudy weather before the temperature leaps to 28C on Saturday with sunny skies forecast.
The temperature will increase to 30C on Sunday before peaking at 33C on Monday and Tuesday – although rain is expected to return by Tuesday.
Melburnians flocked to the beach in late November and will likely do so again over the weekend when the temperature increases to 28C on Saturday and 30C on Sunday. It will peak at 33C on Monday and Tuesday
Hobart will follow a similar pattern to Melbourne with a cloudy skies and a maximum of 17C forecast for Thursday, which will increase to 18C on Friday.
Sunny skies will see the temperature increase to 23C on Saturday, 27C on Sunday and peak at 31C on Monday – although it will drop to 29C with rain on Tuesday.
Adelaide will see clouds clearing with a maximum of 25C on Thursday and is forecast for sunny skies and a maximum of 30C on Friday.
On Saturday, the temperature will increase to 35C before reaching a top of 36C on Sunday and peaking at 37C on Monday.
The temperature will drop to 32C on Tuesday and 26C on Wednesday.
Back in the tropical north, Darwin is forecast for sunny weather and a top of 35C on Friday.
The temperature will drop to 34C with storms forecast for Friday with the maximum dropping to 33C on Saturday and remaining consistent until Wednesday.
Showers and possible storms are forecast all the way from Friday to Wednesday.
