In the first days of November 2015, four Catalan journalists presented the Mexican consul in Barcelona, Fidel Herrera, with a list of questions about his time in Veracruz politics. The event was organized by Lolita Bosch, a writer and human rights defender.
Jordi Évole, David Fernández, Natza Farré and Marc Marginedas tried to clarify doubts about the controversial appointment made by the then president Enrique Peña Nieto.
The meeting was also attended by David Bondia, president of the Institute of Human Rights of Catalonia.
Several questions hovered over the disappearance of journalists and links to the Zetas cartel.
“More than fear, what we have are questions”, Lolita Bosch eloquently commented to the Catalan newspaper El Periódico (November 4, 2015).
Members of the Spanish Government and the Catalan Autonomous Government raised their hands to their heads at the moment of learning about the appointment of Fidel Herrera. “What have we done to Mexico for it to do this to us?” one of them told me.
Six years later, the Mexican consulate in Barcelona, by decision of President López Obrador, will be headed by Claudia Pavlovich, former governor of Sonora.
An investigation by “Mexicans against corruption and impunity” revealed that Governor Pavlovich diverted 140 million pesos to a network of shell companies that were used in “Operation Sapphire.”
In April 2015, the newspaper Reforma revealed that the then candidate for the Government of Sonora asked Raúl Murrieta, Undersecretary of Communications and Transportation, to repeat a tender so that his friends, from Pavlovich, would participate.
The Spanish government has to ask itself: what have we done to President López Obrador to send a politician who lacks consular experience? The question is added to the nomination of Quirino Ordaz, also a PRI member, as ambassador to Spain.
Will the PRI members represent the government of President López Obrador with affiliation to the MORENA party?
It is not difficult to imagine that from the Spanish Foreign Ministry they elaborate a simple conjecture: Is the Mexican president angry, and for that reason he sends us this type of profiles?
There have been many press conferences in which the Mexican president has criticized the government of Pedro Sánchez, the monarchy, El País and Spanish energy companies.
Everything, because he has not received forgiveness from the original peoples.
Is it worth risking one of the main diplomatic relations of Mexico, like the Spanish one?
Has the Government of President López Obrador already sent “aide mémoire” to remind us that Quirino’s approval is still awaited?
Consul Claudia Pavlovich will be able to walk along the Paseo de la Bonanova towards Vía Augusta to enjoy the patatas bravas at the Tomás bar, located at Major de Sarrià 49.
This is politics, generous.
