(CNN) — The cause of death for Lisa Marie Presley has yet to be determined after an initial autopsy was performed, according to the Los Angeles County coroner.
“Presley was examined on January 14 and cause of death information has been deferred. Deferred means that after an autopsy, the cause of death has not been determined and the medical examiner requests further investigation into the death, including additional studies. Once the tests/studies come back, the doctor will evaluate the case again and determine the cause of death,” Sarah Ardalani, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, told CNN.
The singer-songwriter died last week after being hospitalized following an apparent cardiac arrest.
He was 54 years old.
A public funeral for Presley was planned at the Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, for January 22, according to a statement on Graceland’s website.
“In lieu of flowers, the family encourages anyone wishing to send something to do so in the form of a donation to The Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation,” a notice on the site reads.
The Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation supports the arts, education, and efforts on behalf of children in the Memphis area.
Elvis Presley bought the property in 1957 when he was just 22 years old.
He died in the mansion of cardiac arrest in 1977 and is buried on the grounds of Graceland, which is now a museum and a popular tourist attraction. Lisa Marie Presley will also be buried there, along with her son Benjamin Keough, who committed suicide in 2020 at the age of 27.
The Graceland property was held in trust for Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, until her 25th birthday.
“Lisa Marie Presley became more closely involved with the management team of The Elvis Presley Trust and its business entity, Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE), which she owned and chaired the board of directors until February 2005 when she sold a great interest in the company,” according to the Graceland website.
Over the weekend, grief expert David Kessler shared a photo of him and Presley on his verified Instagram account, writing that she had asked him to come with her to Memphis to celebrate her late father’s 88th birthday days before his death.
“She had countless invitations for the weekend, but for her, there were only three important ones: being at her father’s birthday celebration, spending time at her son’s and father’s grave after visits to Graceland stopped, and meeting with a recently grieving mother,” Kessler wrote.
Presley was active in helping others deal with their grief, Kessler wrote, including co-hosting grief groups with him at his home for other grieving parents.
Kessler wrote that when they visited Graceland it was “great fun and she was upbeat” and that “Graceland was her happy place and employees who knew her shared that she looked so much better.”
“She seemed more at peace and was so proud of the Elvis movie. On Saturday night we sat at the graves of her father and her son,” she wrote. “We talked about the heartbreak she grew up with and the devastation over the death of her son. She showed me where she would be buried one day. I told her that in a long time… and she said yes, I have a lot to do”.
Presley is survived by his three daughters, actress Riley Keough and twins Finley and Harper Lockwood. A representative for Graceland confirmed to People that they will inherit the property.
