Experts advise washing clothes made of wool properly to maintain their luster, especially since wool is one of the most delicate fabric materials.
The Body Care and Detergents Industry Association in Germany explained that it is best to wash wool clothes by hand using cold water and a mild washing powder designed for wool, taking care not to rub or twist too hard.
Suitable washing powder
The association added that regular washing powder or colored washing powder are not suitable for washing wool, as they make it lose its soft and luxurious feel. Therefore, it is preferable to use washing liquid designated for children’s clothes.
Wool, with its sensitive fibers, is susceptible to deterioration faster, especially when using chemicals such as chlorine or a powerful laundry detergent that contains bleach and aromatic substances.
Suitable washing programme
The association added that wool can also be washed in an automatic washing machine, taking into account choosing a washing program designated for wool and sensitive clothes.
The appropriate temperature
As for the temperature of the water used for washing, it is recommended to use cold or lukewarm water at the latest, provided that the temperature of the washing water is the same as the temperature of the rinsing water, as the difference in temperature may lead to tissue tangling when moved.
Wash wool by hand
If the clothing label states that hand washing is permitted, be careful not to rub the wool too hard or squeeze it violently, otherwise the fibers will fray.
German expert Bernd Glasl said that clothes made of merino wool, alpaca and cashmere are very delicate, and need a specific washing method to maintain their luxurious appearance and luster.
Therefore, Glasl, a member of the German Association for the Manufacture of Body Care and Detergents, advises washing woolen textiles by hand, taking care not to scrub, as it is better to press them gently inside the sink with a flat hand, not to squeeze them after washing, but rather to press them gently to dry them.
Proper wool drying
If using an automatic washing machine, the spin program must be set to a low number of revolutions, while drying thoroughly. For this purpose, clothes can be placed in the dryer, provided that a program designated for wool is used.
If washed by hand, it must not be squeezed after washing. To dry it properly, it can be placed flat on a towel and pressed gently, away from direct sunlight.
Use dry hair shampoo
Dry hair shampoo is the most appropriate way to wash pullovers with fluff, according to Siegfried Lange, a member of the Association of Textile Cleaning Experts in the city of Bonn, western Germany. This shampoo, which takes care of dry hair, contains fatty substances that prevent the pullovers from losing some of the texture.
It is necessary to carry out the washing process manually, and in the final stage of rinsing, a little textile softening liquid can be added, because it also contains fatty substances.
The German Association added that clothes made of wool, cashmere and mohair often appear with lint, but the reason for this is not due to incorrect handling of these clothes, but rather due mostly to poor manufacturing quality.
Accordingly, shampoo products are not considered a “magic cure” for such clothes, but rather it can be said that these products may alleviate the difficulty of the problem.
