What is the future of Ricardo Monreal?

The first time I interviewed Ricardo Monreal, in 1995, he was a 35-year-old PRI senator representing Zacatecas, his home state. He had been a member of the PRI for 10 years, a party that gave him the opportunity to be, first, a councilor in Fresnillo (1985-1988), then a federal deputy (1988-1991), then a senator (1991-1997) and, finally, a deputy again. federal, in 1997, requesting a license from said position in 1998 to seek the governorship of Zacatecas.

At the beginning of 1998, he resigned from the PRI and went to the PRD when Ernesto Zedillo’s finger pointed to the then federal deputy Marco Antonio Olvera to be that party’s candidate for the governorship of Zacatecas.

The PRD then presided over by Andrés Manuel López Obrador gave him the candidacy for governor that the PRI denied him and in the election on July 5 of that year he won it with 44% of the votes. He took office with a week to go before his 38th birthday.

After being governor, he served as a senator for the PT, a party allied to the PRD, from 2006 to 2012; multi-member federal deputy for MC, at that time also an ally of the PRD, from 2012 to 2015; head of the Morena delegation of Cuauhtémoc, CDMX, from 2015 to 2018 and, currently, senator for Morena from 2018 to 2024.

The decision he made yesterday, December 15, not to support AMLO’s “plan b” for electoral reform, probably means the end of his political career within Morena, even though Andrés Manuel has said that the man from Zacatecas will not leave the party because in this there will be no purges “out of conviction, and also because we don’t want them to use an attitude of intolerance to strengthen the conservative belief that we are Stalinists (…) So, nothing happens if a politician makes a decision. Who is going to judge? The people, history is the one that will put everyone in their place”.

The fact is that since yesterday, December 15, the president began to put Monreal in his place because, when answering a question about the decision of the still coordinator of the Morenista senators, he did not even mention the name of who for so many years was his faithful unconditional.

What he did do was thank the 69 senators who voted in favor of “plan b” despite the fact that many of the reforms to five laws apparently violate the Constitution, something that the Supreme Court of Justice must decide on. of the Nation Furthermore, he ordered his spokesman, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, to read the names of the 69 right there.

It is obvious that Monreal’s days as coordinator of the Morena senators are numbered. It is also hard to believe that he will remain in that party for a long time, even though AMLO has said that there will be no purges because they are not Stalinists. It is enough to see the rude and vulgar way in which some Morenista legislators expressed themselves yesterday, December 15, from Zacatecano to understand that he became a plague for them.

What is the future of the zacatecano? Some say that, after accepting that Morena and AMLO will never make him their presidential candidate, he decided to present himself to public opinion as a champion of legality and a defender of legislative autonomy in order to position himself as a presidential candidate for an alliance of parties of the opposition that could be more attractive than those currently mentioned.
