(Trends Wide Spanish) — A new storm threatens to bring rain and snow to the western United States this Friday and Saturday, prompting rare blizzard warnings for California.
Below is a review of the places that will be affected in the next few hours.
California
“Almost everyone in California will be able to see snow from some point later this week if they look in the right direction,” according to Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Snow is still very unlikely in major California cities, but it will fall pretty close,” he explained.
The Sierra Nevada mountains, for example, could record an accumulation of up to 1.8 of snow Friday through Saturday.
Here’s a rundown of the advisories by county.
San Bernardino
The San Diego National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for the first time, stating that mountains in San Bernardino County could accumulate about 1 to 1.5 meters of snow by Saturday morning.
Los Angeles and Ventura
“This storm system will be unusually cold, and snow levels will be very low. In fact, areas very close to the Pacific coast and also inland valleys that are not used to seeing snow, you may see some snowpack,” the National Weather Service said early Friday.
Conditions are expected to begin to improve by Friday night as the storm moves south.
Nevada
In Nevada, a blizzard warning has also been issued for northwest Nye County, which will be in effect until early Saturday.
“Heavy snow and winds gusting up to 97 km/h will result in zero visibility,” the weather service warned.
