What the march left us

The arrogance of the people of the capital is such that we believe that what happens in the interior of the country —everything in Mexico is interior except the coasts— or the province, as some call the rest of our territory, is not worth taking into account or not. has no importance. “Outside of Mexico, everything is Cuautitlán”, it was said, contemptuously, before this municipality in the State of Mexico was part of the metropolitan area of ​​the metropolis.

The previous reflection arises from the very heading with which I baptized today’s column. Use the noun march in the singular —and I’m going to leave it that way— when I should have written marches because there were several —45 according to some media, 60 according to others— that were held throughout the country. As regards attendance at them, the observers do not agree. It has been calculated that 600,000 people demonstrated throughout the Republic; of which between 250,000 and 300,000 did so in the capital. President López Obrador, on Monday, minimized the number to 60,000 and the next day said it was exceeded. The one who was not measured was the person in charge of the capital office, Martí Batres, who while his boss —Claudia Sheinbaum— was walking around Veracruz on functions proper to her status as a corcholata, he declared that approximately 12,000 citizens had attended the march in the city. (I was going to write that he went too far but on second thought he fell short of the spear).

As I commented at the end of my column on Tuesday, the capital march had some blacks in the rice, political personalities attended whose records are unworthy of democracy. I pointed to Elba Esther, Alito Moreno, Ulises Ruiz, Javier Lozano and Roberto Madrazo. I did not mention Vicente Fox because his verbal excess confirms what the Vatican’s Roman Rota Tribunal expressed in reference to a disorder in his mental faculties. He tweeted: “I warn López once and for all, if he intends to appear again in 2024, I will appear to him, I will also go to hell.”

López Obrador made use of these little blacks in the rice to mock those attending the march whom he called classists and racists, adding fuel to the fire of polarization. Unfortunately for him, AMLO clings to the idea “those who are not with me are against me.” If our first president is really from the left, he should listen and not insult, reflect and rectify and not get stubborn and disqualify those who dare to express their dissent.

In particular, I consider that the INE must be reformed to improve it, but not make it dependent on the federal government, nor elect its directors by popular vote. It must be slimmed down and debureaucratized. It is necessary to put an end to the abundant fees of the directors and their onerous expenses, as well as to eliminate or at least reduce the economic subsidy to political parties. As for the electoral reform, I think that the second round of the presidential elections would give it an interesting and beneficial turn for our democracy.

The Sunday march left the impression that there is a social segment that is shaking off the traditional political apathy and that spontaneously united around a cause that it considers just. It is a lesson for the 4T and its main leader to lower the level of their pride.

On the morning of last Tuesday, López Obrador announced the probability of sending a reform to the electoral law that does not require the approval of two thirds of the Chamber of Deputies. He called it his plan B and after communicating it he let out a laugh that the most fearsome soap opera villain would envy.
