Where does our love go?

I take the title from a song that I played decades ago, with feeling and everything, Angélica María, who has always seemed splendid and beautiful to me. But this text is not about the so-called Mexico’s girlfriend in its time, it is about the eventual reinstatement of the opposition alliance of the PRI, PAN and PRD and the electoral reform of President López, both linked by the situation.

Indeed, after the PRI vote in favor of militarization, the opposition alliance wondered, where is our love going? However, with the decision (hopefully) of the tricolor to reject, together with the PRD, the PAN and MC, the constitutional reform in electoral matters, everything has become optimistic, not only in regard to this situation but also to those that They are coming: secondary electoral laws, election of councilors, elections in Coahuila and the State of Mexico and, of course, the federal elections of 2024.

On the side of President López they sing: the dreams we once had / now we dress them with haughtiness / we thought we were happy and we quarrel / thirty times a month. In the morning, the one with the only voice (the others are usually comparsas) is in a bad mood, the subject is barely hinted at and he disqualifies and insults his adversaries (enemies). He and his hosts seem to have lost the vote on December 6, in which they will not reach two-thirds of the required support, but they are waiting for his revenge. For López Obrador, politics is about revenge and grudges, his Mexican humanism, that amorphous thing that he invented, seems more like a product of Mexican humor.

The illustrious deputy Ignacio Mier has said that they will present and discuss the morenista proposals for secondary electoral laws at the same time that the process to select four INE councilors takes place. That is not what Mr. López had said in one of his mornings, in which he affirmed that he would send his proposals in these days so that they could be voted on before the end of the period. However, apparently he did not give them his head to find a way to harm and immobilize the INE. Of course, it is not ruled out that López Obrador surprises us with some initiative, despite the statements of the coordinator of the deputies of his party. Finally, this is a government where there is no will other than that of the president. All other opinions are background noise.

If everything goes as expected, this coming Tuesday, December 6, the so-called containment bloc will stop President López’s constitutional reform, but it must be taken into account that it is a battle, not war. The oppositions are optimistic and very confident that they will also be able to neutralize the president’s Plan B to dismantle the INE. They’re confident there aren’t many ways to undermine the Institute, but I think they’re overconfident. The issue of the cut budget is serious and the possible merger of entire areas can make the electoral task difficult.

The election of councilors and the reactivation of the process against Alejandro Moreno, national president of the PRI, are other reasons to be alert. MORENA will try to ensure that the four councilors to be chosen are close and they hope that the PRI will once again play the role of comparsa in the next legislative period under penalty of discharging and prosecuting the PRI leader. What is happening with prosecutor Murillo Karam shows the extent to which they are willing to use the justice system against their enemies.

December is a perfect month for abuses from power, citizens are demobilized and with their guard down, party leaders are getting ready to pack up and go on vacation and they forget that they have an enemy in front of them, not an adversary, not rests on the only objective he has: to use all possible means and spaces to consolidate his one-person power. Resting may be a luxury that the opposition cannot afford.

In short, once the vote on the 6th has passed, the party leaders, calmer with the PRI vote, will revive the opposition alliance, but with time running out to agree on methods, rules and candidates for the elections of the 23rd and 24th. On the other hand, the calculations they make to succeed are often taking into account that Movimiento Ciudadano will join the bloc, something that is not certain.
