On January 11 and 12, the International Court of Justice examined the lawsuit filed by South Africa, accusing Israel of committing genocide during the war it has been waging in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.
The court, which is headquartered in the Dutch city of The Hague, is considered the main judicial body of the United Nations. It was established in 1945 and has general jurisdiction, as it considers all cases referred by the parties to it, and all matters specifically stipulated in the United Nations Charter or in treaties. and applicable agreements.
The court is expected to issue a ruling – this month – on a possible urgent decision ordering Israel to stop the war, but it will not quickly decide on genocide charges because this issue may take years.
The attached infographic sheds light on the court’s 15 judges, led by American Joan Donoghue (president of the court) and Russian vice president Kirill Gevorgyan, noting that the two’s terms expire next month.
There are also 3 Arab judges in the court: the Moroccan Muhammad Bennouna, the Lebanese Nawaf Salam, and the Somali Abdul Qawi Yusuf.
