Who can stop cybercrime

Ten million a year is the tentative record for fraud, theft and cyber extortion, although it could be more, since there is a real record, and the complaint for this crime is very low.

Facing the world cybersecurity day, which is commemorated this Wednesday, reality is beyond us.

In the last seven years, the average digital or telephone fraud attempt has been around 10 million per year. Of the attempts, 92% fail, 8% are successful. However, there are states where the success of criminals is greater. As in CDMX, this type of crime is less effective.

According to the Condusef, led by Oscar Rosado, in the last decade user complaints about possible electronic fraud grew from 8 to 65 percent compared to 2011.

One of the ways of hijacking information from people and companies is when hackers steal the information of a company or a person through a virus, which gives access to all systems.

But, they are also looking to enter banking, service and online shopping platforms.

A study carried out by the Internet Association in Mexico reported that in 2021 five out of 10 digital users were victims of some cyber fraud, mainly information theft, deception and financial losses.

The reality is that the issue should be attacked jointly by the private initiative and the government, in order to have greater control and education among citizens.

However, the problem is titanic and the medicine should be the same. Where the Association of Banks of Mexico, chaired by Daniel Becker, the SICT, headed by Jorge Nuño, telephone and internet companies, and everything involved in the cyber world, had responsibilities and clear laws on how to limit to eradicate or minimize the theme.

A law that is intertwined and can be acted on. Otherwise we will continue to see how the form of extortion and cyber fraud evolves.

What has happened since deception, where false prizes, identity verification, email theft, false accounts, loans or deposits are old practices giving way to much more, such as fake apps, fake company pages, the theft of telephone numbers and much more, which give way to the insecurity of what was thought to be safe, and which, as it is increasingly necessary, exposes us to losing, not only assets but all our information. The question is: could something be done?
