(CNN Spanish) — Jeremy Renner grew up with his four younger siblings in Modesto, California, where his parents ran a bowling alley.
His arrival in the world of acting was almost random, according to the actor’s own account. “It was pure luck. It started in college. I took an acting class as an elective and that’s how everything changed for me,” he explained in an interview with Vanity Fair.
It was not his only role in the industry. When he was in his 20s, early in his acting career, Renner was also a makeup artist for eight years.
“Dahmer”, the kick to stardom
The leading role that would give way to Hollywood was in the movie “Dahmer”, from 2002. “This movie means a lot to me. It did well for me, in the sense that people within the industry saw it and noticed me, ”he said about it in his interview with Vanity Fair.
His performance as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was the reason director Kathryn Bigelow cast him in the lead role of “The Hurt Locker.”
The film was nominated for nine Oscars, including best actor for Renner, for playing a sergeant assigned to the bomb squad in the Iraq war. In the end, “The Hurt Locker” won six Oscars, including best picture and best direction for Bigelow, making her the first woman to win that category.
Jeremy Renner’s jump to Marvel
In 2011, he would appear for the first time in two successful Hollywood franchises: the Marvel saga and “Mission: Impossible.”
The first “Thor” movie introduced “Hawkeye” to the world of Marvel, to later put him alongside the other superheroes, in 2012, in the movie “The Avengers.”
Renner also appeared in two “Mission: Impossible” films alongside Tom Cruise and other memorable characters from the franchise.
In 2021, Renner was the lead in two new projects. In one of them he acted once again as “Hawkeye”, in the series of the same name, centered on Clint Barton and his new apprentice, Kate Bishop. And he was also in “Mayor of Kingstown,” where the powerful McLusky family tackles issues of systemic racism, corruption, and inequality.
Renner spoke about these issues publicly several times. “Everyone has the right to have a voice in something (…). I think that awareness of others is a very important quality. It’s called compassion, it’s called emotional intelligence and being considerate of others,” she said in 2018.
