Who should be the successor to Arturo Zaldívar?

Yasmín Esquivel Mossa, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Javier Laynez Potisek, Alberto Pérez Dayán and Lucía Piña Hernández are the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) who are seeking the presidency of the country’s highest court and the Council of the Judiciary Federal (CJF).

They seek to succeed Arturo Zaldívar Lelo de Larrea in office, starting January 2, who during his tenure has been accused of being too close to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who sought and failed in his attempt to have it extended. three more years his permanence at the head of the SCJN and the CJF.

Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, 53 years old and born in CDMX: “Comrade ministers and ministers, society expects a lot from us; We will dialogue with her —considering her plural and diverse— and with her concerns”.

Laynez Potisek, 63, a native of Torreón, Coahuila: “The new stage in the development of democracy in Mexico, as well as a generation of an empowered and increasingly participatory citizenry in public affairs, demand that the Judiciary fully assume its role as one of the three pillars of the State and be a source of dynamism, certainty and opportunities to advance for the Nation”.

Pérez Dayán, 61, originally from CDMX: “We are in a complex social, historical and political context, in which the current circumstances of the country, including the climate of insecurity, levels of corruption, excessive bureaucracy in the institutions, the delay in justice and, in other cases, the absence of it, which has generated a lack of confidence in the institutions among the citizens, and the Federal Judiciary has not been the exception”.

Piña Hernández, 63 years old, born in CDMX: “In accordance with article 29 of the Internal Regulations of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, in this document I will present my proposal of general lines for the Presidency of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) and the Federal Judicial Council (CJF), for the period 2023-2026; however, prior to its development, I will expose my understanding of the functions of the Presidency of the SCJN, since the nature of the work instrument that I present to you depends on it”.
