(Trends Wide) — If you want to cross the border with cascarones (confetti-filled eggshells, very common in Mexico), you’ll need to bring 12 or fewer, according to US Customs and Border Protection.
The agency issued a press release Thursday reminding travelers that they can only take a maximum of 12 shells with them when entering the US before the Easter celebrations.
According to the statement, the eggs “may be decorated, engraved or painted, but they must be clean, dry and free of egg remains.” The white and yolk should be removed.
The reason shells are restricted is the spread of disease, the press release explains. Contaminated eggshells can spread avian diseases such as Newcastle disease and highly pathogenic bird flu. The warning comes as the US continues to grapple with the deadliest outbreak of bird flu ever seen in the country, with millions of domestic birds contracting the disease.
Newcastle disease can kill up to 90% of exposed birds, according to the news release, and highly pathogenic avian influenza is also associated with “exceptionally high mortality” in birds.
Although shells can be brought into the US in limited quantities, fresh eggs, raw chicken, and live or poultry are completely prohibited, according to the news release.
