Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Global tourism suffered its worst year on record in 2020, with the proportion of international arrivals dropping by 74%, according to the latest data from the World Tourism Organization.
The organization’s data indicates that global destinations received a billion fewer international arrivals in 2020 compared to the previous year, due to the unprecedented decrease in demand and global travel restrictions due to the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.
The World Tourism Organization’s measure of global tourism issued by the Tourism Organization shows that the collapse in the international travel industry caused an estimated loss of $ 1.3 trillion in export earnings, more than 11 times the loss recorded during the global economic crisis in 2009. The crisis also exposed between 100 and 120 million dollars. Jobs in the tourism sector are at risk, among them many in small and medium-sized enterprises.
The latest survey conducted by the UNWTO’s expert committee showed that expectations are mixed for 2021, with about 45% of respondents envisioning better prospects for 2021 compared to last year, 25% expecting similar performance and 30% deteriorating results for 2021.
