Women’s MX League advances with growth and slopes

At this point when the Liga MX Femenil starts its twelfth tournament, what issues are still on the table and what can be recognized in terms of improvements over six years?

In sports, the league has managed to hang records for audiences, attendance at stadiums, goals scored, more international projection, but still issues such as salaries, the economic capacity of the entire circuit to sign high-level foreigners and the lack regulations that protect the safety and integrity of the players are still pending.

Five teams of the 18 in the league have concentrated the titles and runners-up: Tigres, Rayadas, Chivas, América and Pachuca. Also, they are the same projects that have disbursed resources for high-profile reinforcements. However, this cannot be generalized as a development conclusion.

”There are teams that are investing and we see the arrival of well-known foreign players. In that sense, it is a good thing that they come at a good moment in their careers and it increases the competition in the league, but having other pending issues with most of the teams, the league is becoming more fractured and the competition is closed to five teams and the others just participate. While there are pending steps forward are taken as a mirage, we can see Tigres and say that their project is spectacular, but it does not speak for the entire League. This has repercussions at the national team level”, explains Adrianelly Hernández, a journalist, teacher and researcher with 13 years of experience covering women’s soccer.

Mexico will not have representation for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games or for the Women’s World Cup this year. The wake-up call is that the technical director, Mónica Vergara summoned 15 soccer players from the Liga MX Femenil. The club that contributed the most players was Tigres with six.
