World Series 2022 reflects low audience in the US

Viewership numbers indicate that MLB’s exhibition event still faces big challenges. The Astros vs. Phillies was the least watched World Series on record, according to Sports Media Watch.

Game 6 of the series in which the Astros were crowned champions, summoned 12.5 million viewers on American television.

The entire World Series averaged 11,784,000 viewers, which is just 1% less than the Atlanta Braves’ six-game victory over the Astros last year.

“Over 20 reliable hours of viewership every fall which is 30% better than anything else, but I find the NFL pretty good. The World Series remains a force in primetime television and a major contributor to Fox’s status as the leader in live sports viewing,” Fox executive Mike Mulvihill tweeted.

This was the fourth time in the last six seasons that the Houston Astros played in the Fall Classic. The team had to overcome a major blow to its image after the 2017 sign-stealing scandal, which eventually cost general manager Jeff Luhnow and team manager AJ Hinch their jobs.

In terms of streaming content, the Astros vs. Phillies remained the most watched World Series in Fox history, with an average audience per minute of 232,307, up 2% compared to last year.

However, the Fall Classic was beaten by college football. The broadcast of the Georgia-Tennessee big game, televised by CBS, drew more than 13 million viewers.

According to data from HR Media, in Mexico 3.1 million people watched the 2022 World Series, which was broadcast from October 28 to November 5. Of the audience, 36% were men over the age of 18. Compared to 2021, there were 7.5 million fewer viewers in the World Series. Game 5 on Thursday, November 3 was the most watched, by about 1.3 million people.

Game 6 was watched by 983,00 people with 35% of the audience not watching the previous games in the series. As for the entire season, 17.7 million unique people watched it, with each person watching an average of four games for 40 minutes.
