The semifinalists in the WTA Finals tournament, organized at the Dickies Arena in the state of Texas, made great merits to reach that position. Iga Swiatek, Maria Sakkari, Caroline GarcĂa and Aryna Sabalenka presume to be among the best 10 in the world according to the ranking of the association itself and had outstanding performances in the competition.
The number one in the world came as a favorite to at least reach the final of the competition, however, she brought a failure in tow. Unfortunately for her cause, Swiatek fell in the final of the Ostrava Open in a surprise to Barbora Crejcikova, number 21 in the world who had the support of her compatriots in the Czech Republic.
Iga accumulates more than 10,000 points in the WTA ranking and it is not for less, since the 21-year-old Pole boasts great power, especially on her serve and a record of 64 wins and eight losses in 2022. According to data from the association itself , the tennis player accumulates 134 aces and an effectiveness percentage of 75.4% in service games won. As if this were not enough, in 2022 she managed to win Roland Garros and the US Open.
Sakkari, ranked fifth in the world and once third, has yet to boast an individual title in her career since 2019 when she won the WTA 250 organized in Rabat, Morocco. In the present 2022 she has not been able to transcend in the Grand Slams, however she was a finalist in the WTA 1,000 that was organized in Guadalajara, unfortunately she fell in two sets against the North American Jessica Pegula.
Interestingly, the Greek tennis player managed to beat her rival in Jalisco during the WTA Finals in the group stage, a victory that was essential for her to reach one of the four places in the tournament semifinals. She entered the competition with a record of 37 wins and 22 losses for the year.
The French Caroline Garcia has had a great year in which she boasts three individual titles since June to date: Bad Homburg Open, Paribas Open and the Cincinnati Masters. She even managed to reach the semifinals of the US Open, her best position in the more than 40 Grand Slams she has contested since 2011.
Caroline’s record this year is 41 wins and only 19 losses before beginning her participation in the WTA Finals where she is already among the best four tennis players in the tournament.
Aryna Sabalenka is the worst ranked of the semifinalists and has come down in her overall performance, since in August 2021 she was considered number two on the planet. In the current year she has not been able to add any individual title, so her position in the WTA Finals surprised some.
Her most recent history among the top four in a tournament was at this year’s US Open where Iga Swiatek ended up eliminating her. Until before the competition organized in Texas, Aryna accumulated 30 wins and 20 losses in individual matches.
