With the Major League Baseball trade deadline looming at 6 p.m. ET on July 31, teams are in a final push to solidify their rosters. While some clubs, like the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, have already made significant moves, numerous high-profile players remain the subject of intense trade discussions.
Yankees Target Pirates’ Pitching Duo
The New York Yankees are actively pursuing pitching reinforcements and have engaged in talks with the Pittsburgh Pirates regarding closer David Bednar and right-handed starter Mitch Keller. While the current asking price is reportedly high, New York’s interest is fueled by significant need.
The team’s bullpen has been one of the league’s worst since June 1, and the starting rotation is without aces Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt for the remainder of the season due to elbow surgeries. Although reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is nearing his season debut, the potential additions of Bednar and Keller would provide major upgrades. Bednar is under team control through 2026 and Keller is signed through 2028, making them two of the most valuable long-term assets on the market.
Astros and Padres Discussing Dylan Cease
The Houston Astros have reportedly placed San Diego Padres All-Star pitcher Dylan Cease at the top of their wish list. The Padres are said to be open to trading the impending free agent, provided they receive major-league talent in return to bolster their own roster, particularly at designated hitter.
Houston’s motivation is clear, as their pitching staff has been decimated by injuries to Lance McCullers Jr., Ronel Blanco, Luis Garcia, and Cristian Javier, among others. The prospect of creating a playoff rotation featuring Cease alongside Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown could compel the Astros to meet San Diego’s demands.
Blue Jays Acquire Reliever, Eye Another
The Toronto Blue Jays bolstered their bullpen by acquiring right-handed reliever Seranthony Domínguez and cash from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown. Domínguez, an impending free agent, has posted a 3.24 ERA over 41 innings this season. Watts-Brown, a 2023 third-round pick, holds a 3.54 ERA across 19 starts in High-A and Double-A.
This may not be Toronto’s final bullpen move, as the club remains interested in St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley.
Top Contenders Compete for Closer Ryan Helsley
Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley appears likely to be traded, recently stating he believes there is a “90% chance” he will be moved. A number of top contenders, including the Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, Mets, Rangers, and Blue Jays, have shown interest in the impending free agent. This season, Helsley has recorded a 3.00 ERA in 36 innings.
Other Notable Trade Rumors
-
Brandon Lowe: The Tampa Bay Rays second baseman is drawing interest from the Mets and Astros. Lowe, who is controllable through a club option next season, is hitting .269 with 19 home runs in 86 games. He is currently on the injured list with foot tendinitis but is expected to return this week.
-
Dalton Rushing: Despite recent trade speculation, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated he does not “see a world in which” rookie catcher Dalton Rushing is traded. Rushing, a top prospect, has seen limited action as Will Smith’s backup.
-
Steven Kwan: The Dodgers and Blue Jays are reportedly interested in Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan, should he become available. Kwan is hitting .287 with a .351 on-base percentage and is under team control through 2027, giving Cleveland reason to hold onto him as they remain in the playoff hunt.
-
Ryan O’Hearn: The Milwaukee Brewers are among the teams targeting Baltimore Orioles first baseman/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn. The impending free agent is one of the best bats on the market, hitting .284/.375/.452 with 12 home runs.
