In an interview with Oksana Boyko, via RT’s Worlds Apart program, Zarif said that it is possible that the Biden administration will begin thawing relations between Tehran and Washington, but he stressed that he was not close to Biden, and that it would be wrong to believe that his personal relationship with Biden was It could help cause a major diplomatic breakthrough between the two old rivals.
Zarif added that his history with Biden can be traced back to nearly 20 years, when he was Iran’s envoy to the United Nations. But he insisted that his dealings with the new US president were completely professional.
When I asked Boyko about Biden’s pledge to reformulate the foreign policy of the United States to make it reflect the desires of ordinary Americans, Zarif said that this pledge is a “difficult task,” noting that Washington’s current policy of imposing unilateral sanctions is “basically an economic war” and ” Economic terrorism. “
Nevertheless, he said he hoped the new administration would start moving bilateral relations with Tehran in the “right direction.”
Zarif insisted that Iran was not particularly interested in who sits in the White House, as long as the United States respects its agreements under the 2015 nuclear deal.
Zarif said that the decision to withdraw from the agreement had already backfired for Washington, noting that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium had ballooned from only 300 kilograms to 4,000 kilograms, after the United States unilaterally withdrew from the deal.
Zarif added, “We are not optimistic, but we do not close the door, and we are not talking about a more comprehensive deal. If this were possible, we would have made it 5 years ago.”
He emphasized that Iran was and is still in the nuclear agreement, while the United States is the one who left it, and if it returns to the agreement, nothing will prevent us from fully implementing our obligations under the agreement.
