The Ukrainian president denied Volodymyr Zelensky Yesterday, Saturday, the war with Russia reached a “dead end,” and he said that there was a need for more work with the allies to strengthen air defenses.
Zelensky’s statements came days after an article by the Supreme Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Valery Zalughny, in which he stated that the conflict was heading towards a new phase of attritional fighting, a phase that may allow Moscow to rebuild its military strength.
Zelensky said during a press conference in Ukraine with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen“Today, time is passing and people are tired. But this is not a dead end. Russia controls the sky. We care about the affairs of our army.”
Zelensky admitted that there were difficulties in the war, which has now entered its 21st month, and he also acknowledged that Kiev had not yet achieved any major successes in its counterattack. But he said that Ukrainian forces had no other alternative but to continue fighting and request more support from Western allies, especially regarding air defences.
Slow progress
Ukrainian forces made slow progress across vast Russian minefields in a counterattack that began in the east and south in early June, but Russia responded forcefully in the east.
The Ukrainian military said in a daily briefing that Russian forces were launching several attacks near Avdiivka, Liman and Marinka in the eastern Donetsk region. He added that Ukrainian forces continue to advance in the southeast towards the Sea of Azov.
On the other hand, Russian news agencies quoted the Ministry of Defense in Moscow as saying that a ship was damaged as a result of Ukraine launching 15 cruise missiles at a shipyard in the city of Kerch yesterday, Saturday.
The ministry added in a statement that air defense systems destroyed 13 of the missiles launched by Ukraine.
European Union
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kiev yesterday, Saturday, to discuss the expansion of the European Union with Zelensky.
She explained on the X platform, “I am here to discuss Ukraine’s accession pathFor the European UnionShe posted a photo of herself with Zelensky, saying they would also discuss “financial support for rebuilding a prosperous, modern, democratic Ukraine.”
On November 8, the Commission must issue its report on the progress made by Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, and take a decision on launching accession negotiations before the EU summit in Brussels on December 14 and 15.
