It is very possible that most of society is already used to the news that talk about the violence that is suffered, but last week’s wave was outside the parameters that are handled. It is worth making a quick count: a failed operation that failed to arrest neither Ricardo Ruiz Velasco, “el RR”, nor Gerardo González Ramírez, “el Apá”, lieutenants of Nemesio Oseguera, El Mencho, head of the Jalisco Nueva Cartel Generation. In response, the criminals ordered the burning of public and private vehicles, of commercial establishments, notably 25 OXXOs, in Jalisco and Guanajuato.
By the way, if you compare this operation with the one that arrested Ovidio Guzmán, son of Chapo, and later released him, you will notice the double standards of government “security.” The reason that López Obrador used at that time was the danger that the population ran if Ovidio’s arrest went ahead, in the case of the people of Mencho the government did not care what happened next. Even President López minimized it and has not apologized for not measuring the consequences that caused significant patrimonial damage to many.
After the events in Jalisco and Guanajuato, there was an attack on the civilian population in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, in which seven people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time died and vehicles and businesses were also burned. On this matter, López sent his condolences to the relatives of the murdered people, but he never made the slightest attempt to help them in any other way. Again the double standards. In Tlahuelilpan, Hidalgo, a large group of residents was illegally “milking” an oil pipeline when a large explosion occurred. After this, the resident ordered that the families be helped, despite the illegality of the act. On the other hand, to the innocent people of Ciudad Juárez, who died due to the lack of security, he did not even have the sensitivity to offer help. A statistic for Zero Impunity Thursdays.
The week continued with vehicle fires and blockades in Baja California and ended with the events in Michoacán and Guanajuato again. Again, the president minimized everything and assured that there is full governability, something that is clearly not true.
But let’s go to the interpretation of what happened in that violent last week. There are several versions. Many accuse the president of having asked his allies in organized crime to carry out all this violence to justify the transfer of the National Guard to SEDENA in a legal manner. In the antipodes of this reading, that of those close to the president is that it was a riot by conservatives who asked their allies in organized crime to unleash violence to damage the president’s image. López Obrador suggested that perhaps this could be true.
This interpretation falls alone. To begin with, who are the conservatives? Let’s see names mentioned in the morning: Claudio X. González, Enrique Krauze, Héctor Aguilar Camín, among others. All of them have had a public life in which they could hardly hide links or alliances with criminals of that ilk. The accusation is a smokescreen to try to hide the failure of the (let’s say) security strategy.
Regarding the links of organized crime with governments, parties and politicians, Porfirio Muñoz Ledo has accused that the López Obrador government has a “collusion” with organized crime, for which he proposed creating a Truth Commission to investigate these facts. . There are enough facts for that commission to be set up.
I personally believe that there is a kind of implicit agreement with organized crime, a way of letting things go as long as they behave discreetly and do not confront their government. Of course, he did not rule out the strong possibility that some members of the 4T have close contact and agreements with members of crime. Agreements that translate into money for campaigns, vehicles, intimidation of political rivals and lucrative deals. Things the president prefers not to know about.
In that sense, the commission proposed by Muñoz Ledo is a good idea. Bring to light the links, winks, permissiveness, money and business between the current government and organized crime. But this task must be parallel to that of denouncing, over and over again, the ineffectiveness of the security that has failed on the part of the governments.
Parties, civil and business organizations, intellectuals, women, children, adults, we are all potential victims in the face of the lack of real interest of the López government. Let us be aware of this.
