(CNN) – Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post that Facebook’s restrictions on US President Donald Trump’s account will continue for at least the next two weeks, and possibly “indefinitely.”
The decision marks a major escalation on the part of Facebook, as it is under heavy pressure to ban Trump after his inflammatory speech encouraging the revolt.
And if the restrictions persist, Facebook could be the first large social platform to permanently remove Trump.
Earlier, Facebook announced that Trump was banned from posting on its platform for 24 hours, after it removed a video clip he had posted of his supporters who participated in the riots. Trump also faced a 24-hour ban on Instagram owned by Facebook.
Twitter took a similar step on Wednesday by shutting down Trump’s account on the network, after his supporters stormed the Congress building to protest the election.
The announcement represents a major escalation by social media companies against the Trump account, and he responds to calls from civil rights groups to ban Trump from the platforms.
