The German women’s national team has advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 European Championship in Switzerland following a 6-5 quarter-final victory over France. Adding to the national excitement, the squad features two players born in Kiel: Selina Cerci and Laura Freigang.
For 25-year-old Selina Cerci of TSG Hoffenheim, this is her first major international tournament. Her journey began at local club SV Friedrichsort before she joined the youth team of Holstein Kiel at 14. Her debut on the international stage marks a significant comeback after a cruciate ligament injury forced her to miss the 2022 Euros. She returned to dominate the last Bundesliga season, finishing as the top scorer.
She is joined by 27-year-old Laura Freigang, an Eintracht Frankfurt player now participating in her second European Championship. Freigang also has deep roots in Kiel, returning to the city as a teenager to play for Holstein Kiel’s youth academy. The gifted attacker made an immediate impact, scoring twice in her B-Juniorinnen-Bundesliga debut at just 14. Freigang maintains strong ties to her hometown, regularly visiting family and attending matches at the Holstein-Stadion.
Germany is now set to face world champions Spain in a highly anticipated semi-final on Wednesday, July 23. The match will kick off at 9 PM at the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich.
Fans in Schleswig-Holstein will have several opportunities to watch the game at public viewings. In Kiel, the STUDIO Filmtheater will screen the semi-final in its cinema bar. If Germany reaches the final, the screening will be moved to the main cinema hall. In Lübeck, the Finnegan Irish Pub will show all tournament matches, with German games broadcast with full audio.
