Saturday Night Live opened this week with the return of James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump, spoofing a recent press conference where a man collapsed in the Oval Office.
The sketch parodied a viral photo from the event, which showed the real president appearing indifferent as the man received medical attention on the floor. In the skit, Johnson’s Trump similarly ignores the man, even stepping over his legs while Dr. Mehmet Oz and others rush to help.
The cold open used the incident as a launchpad to satirize the week’s political news, including the off-year elections where Democratic victories were widely seen as a rebuke of the president amid rising consumer prices. Referencing the economic concerns, Johnson’s Trump quipped, “I promised grocery prices would plummet, and they did. They plummeted straight up.”
Addressing Thanksgiving affordability, he joked, “People are now saying, ‘But sir, how will I afford my Thanksgiving turkey for my family?’ Well, the good news is your family is not coming because all the planes are gone. We call that problem solving problem.” Johnson’s Trump then offered a cynical solution to high food costs: “Can’t afford food. Have some cheap Ozempic. Now you are not hungry and you get to take one, weird, painful poop a week.”
The sketch also tackled the ongoing government shutdown, which has impacted food and nutrition benefits and caused flight cancellations as air traffic controllers work without pay. “The government is still shut down, all thanks to the Democrats and some Republicans and all Republicans, and me,” Johnson’s Trump declared. Dismissing calls to end the standoff, he added, “I think we’re going to drag it out… and while we’re at it, we’re looking at perhaps stealing Christmas. We’ll be doing Grinch. I like the Grinch. He’s a great guy.”
