Brewers Promote Vaughn After Hoskins’ Thumb Injury Sidelines First Baseman
MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers activated infielder Andrew Vaughn from Triple-A Nashville on Monday, placing starting first baseman Rhys Hoskins on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained left thumb. Hoskins sustained the injury during Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the Miami Marlins, with his IL placement retroactive to Sunday.
Vaughn, 27, joined the Brewers organization on June 13 in a trade sending pitcher Aaron Civale to the Chicago White Sox. In 16 games with Triple-A Nashville, the former top prospect recorded a .259 batting average, .338 on-base percentage, three home runs, and 16 RBIs. This marked significant progress after a challenging start to 2024 with the White Sox, during which he batted .189 with a .218 OBP over 48 games before a May 23 demotion.
“I focused on swing consistency and smarter decisions—small adjustments, not an overhaul,” Vaughn said before Milwaukee’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers. “My goal is daily confidence at the plate to help this team win.”
Despite hitting 72 home runs for Chicago from 2021-2024, Vaughn’s production declined sharply this season. His .699 OPS in 2023 was a career low at the time, followed by a .211 average in 15 minor-league games with Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate prior to the trade.
Vaughn now provides a right-handed complement to lefty Jake Bauers (.214, 5 HR, 18 RBI in 54 games) at first base during Hoskins’ absence. The 32-year-old Hoskins leaves a notable gap in the lineup, having batted .242 with 12 homers and 42 RBIs in 82 games this season. Milwaukee has not specified a timetable for his return.
