A key factor in the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive success this season has been their stellar pass protection, which has consistently given quarterback Sam Darnold ample time to operate. Through eight games, Darnold has been sacked just nine times, tying for the fewest in the NFL. The team has also recorded three games without allowing a single sack, including last weekend’s win in Washington.
Head Coach Mike Macdonald commended the offensive line but stressed that pass protection is a collective effort. “It’s an 11-man job,” he stated. “The timing of plays, how we identify pressures, how we execute protections… and Sam getting through his progressions, there’s a lot of trust involved.”
Macdonald added, “They’re doing a great job protecting Sam. I think we’re staying square. We’re being firm in the pocket, which is letting Sam do his thing back there.”
However, Seattle’s line is set for a formidable challenge this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals’ pass rush. The Cardinals are the only team to have recorded three sacks against the Seahawks this season and are coming off an impressive five-sack performance in their Monday night win over the Cowboys.
Furthermore, Arizona’s defensive front has been reinforced since the last meeting. First-round draft pick Walter Nolen III made his NFL debut on Monday, making an immediate impact with a sack.
